Religious Sisters of Charity join agencies for poverty symposium

At a time when evaporation of markets, investments and jobs in 2008 have created a harsh new reality for people from across the globe in 2009, 17 agencies and religious congregations will gather at Mount St. Mary's College Doheny Campus on 14 February for a symposium on "The Different Faces of Poverty."

At a time when evaporation of markets, investments and jobs in 2008 have created a harsh new reality for people from across the globe in 2009, 17 agencies and religious congregations will gather at Mount St. Mary's College Doheny Campus on 14 February for a symposium on "The Different Faces of Poverty."

The symposium, open to the public, is sponsored by the Southern California Partnership for Global Justice, a coalition of agencies and religious congregations committed to raising awareness and creating action on global, social justice issues.

The keynote speaker is Sister of Social Service Simone Campbell, executive director of NETWORK, the Catholic Social Justice Lobby in Washington, D.C. Other workshop topics and speakers:

"While the World Remains Silent: Palestinian Refugees," Dr. Laila AL-Marayati, chair of Kinder, USA

"Civilization is Possible," Blase Bompane, director of Office of the Americas

"Poverty and Human Trafficking," Kay Buck, executive director of Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST)

"Water, a Right or a Commodity?" Jim DeHarpporte, Western Regional director, Catholic Health Services

"The Food Crisis," Michael Flood, CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

"Wisdom without Walls: A Crossover," Sister Suzanne Jabro, director of Women in Prison Project and Get on the Bus Programs

"Loving Our Neighbor: The Immigrant," Amalia Molina, Family Offenders advocate for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles

"The Uninsured: Health Care and the Prospects of Reform," Lucien Wulsin, executive director of Insure the Uninsured Project

Coalition members include the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Human Trafficking; Daughters of Charity, West Province; Daughters of Mary and Joseph; Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose; Immaculate Heart Community; Office and Justice and Peace, Archdiocese of L.A.; Pax Christi Los Angeles; Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary; Religious Sisters of Charity; Sisters of Notre Dame; Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus & Mary; Sisters of Providence; Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet; Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange; Sisters of St. Louis; Sisters of Social Service; and Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus.
