A film well worth seeing is "Hidden Figures" which is based on a true story about three highly educated women, who suffered oppression in society and in a male dominated work environment. Despite all of this they respectfully stood in their own truth and became recognised for the great women they were.
St Andrew’s Hospice Airdrie has reached another stage in its development. The plan to refurbish and reconfigurate the building and prepare it for the future has begun to be put into practice. But first the building had to be emptied. The patients, staff and equipment have been moved to a NHS facility one and a half miles away in Wester Moffatt while the work goes on at St Andrew’s.
December days can be dark and cold but last December was brightened by evenings of beautiful music. Father Philip McGovern, Parish Priest in Our Lady’s Church is a member of the Oriel Singers and he invited the Choir to perform Advent and Christmas songs in the Church after Mass on Saturday December 2nd. It was an event the parishioners and friends looked forward to as the Choir had given a concert of Lent and Easter music earlier in the year.
It’s a very common sight to see homeless people sleeping rough in our UK towns and cities. There are many charities throughout the country which aim to support homeless people in various ways. New initiatives are growing up beside long standing ones as the problem of homelessness and poverty grows in our society.
This year Earth Hour is at 8:30pm on 25 March 2017. Around the globe, millions of people, businesses, and landmarks will be setting aside an hour to host events, switch off their lights, and make noise for climate change action. But it is so much more than just an hour… over the years, Earth Hour participants have helped make some pretty amazing things happen. From changing laws to funding solar-powered homes they have made a real, positive impact on our planet.
Preparations for the big feastday began in December when the Friends came together to plan. The first item on the agenda was ‘food’ which is so important in our area where food is scarce. It was decided to have goat and nshima, the local staple food. The purchase of a goat and those who would slaughter it was organised.
Meanwhile in California….our Sr. Mary Beausang, who turned 90 in January, celebrated her Birthday in style. She has been living at Seacrest Nursing Home since May 2016, where she is a loved and appreciated resident. She is the only religious sister there and she considers it part of her ministry to talk to and pray for the other residents. Her friendly kind presence and sense of humor has brightened up the lives of many of the women and men in residence.

On the afternoon of Saturday, 28th January 60 Sisters gathered in the Mary Aikenhead Day Centre in Donnybrook to celebrate the annual New Year’s Party for our senior Sisters. The afternoon began with a creative Prayer Reflection led by Sr Lorraine McCarthy. This was followed by a delicious high tea which afforded time for old friends to chat and reminisce. Then the entertainment began...
